Iraq and the Middle East: The Path Ahead

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs will host a bipartisan roundtable discussion led by Congressmen Mark Kirk and Dan Lipinski regarding the status of U.S. involvement in the Middle East with a focus on the path ahead in Iraq. Participants will include Ambassador Henry Crumpton, Ambassador Robert Gelbard, and Paul Hughes from the United States Institute of Peace. The panelists will discuss the state of affairs in Iraq and the Middle East, the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, and the options the U.S. and world community might employ in approaching the path forward in the region.
U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk represents the 10th Congressional District of Illinois including the northern suburbs of Chicago. Congressman Kirk serves on the House Appropriations Committee and sits on the State-Foreign Operations Subcommittee. He also serves as a naval reserve intelligence officer, working one weekend a month in the Pentagon.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski represents the 3rd Congressional District of Illinois including large parts of Chicago, as well as several suburban communities in west and southwest Cook County. Congressman Lipinski serves on three House Committees: Transportation and Infrastructure, Science and Technology, and Small Business.
Ambassador Henry A. Crumpton served as the coordinator for counterterrorism at the U.S. Department of State from August 2005 until February 2007. Working directly for the secretary of state, he developed, coordinated, and implemented U.S. counterterrorism policy. Mr. Crumpton joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1981 as a clandestine service operations officer. For most of his 24-year career he operated in the foreign field, including assignments as chief of station. In Washington, he held senior management positions, including an assignment to the Federal Bureau of Investigation as deputy chief of the International Terrorism Operations Section, 1998-1999. He also served as deputy chief (operations) of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, 1999-2000, and led the CIA’s Afghanistan campaign, 2001-2002.
Ambassador Robert Gelbard, a career Foreign Service officer, was U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, 1999-2001, and served as special representative of the president and secretary of state for the Balkans, 1997-1999. Mr. Gelbard was responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of U.S. policy for the Dayton Peace Accords.
Paul Hughes is a senior program officer in the Center for Post-Conflict Peace and Stability Operations at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) where he led the Iraq Study Group’s Military and Security Expert Working Group. Prior to joining USIP, he served as an active duty Army colonel and as the Army’s senior military fellow to the Institute for National Security Studies of the National Defense University.
