NAVIGATING GLOBAL BUSINESS IN THE NEW ECONOMY

David W. Nelms, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Discover Financial Services
Carlos A. Cabrera, former Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, UOP a Honeywell Company

Moderated by Paul A. Laudicina, Managing Officer and Chairman of the Board, A.T. Kearney, Inc. and Member of the Board of Directors, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

The global financial crisis has changed the playing field for many industry sectors and governments across the globe. Governments are becoming more involved in business through increased regulations and stimulus plans while companies struggle with declining revenues. High levels of government deficit spending have longer-term implications for both individuals and businesses. Much of the political and business discussions have focused on when the economy will stabilize rather than how a recovery will evolve. It is critical that companies and organizations begin planning for the future and developing strategic responses for new economic realities by looking at the various recovery and risk management scenarios. This panel will review three recovery scenarios and discuss how corporations in different industry sectors will operate in the “New Normal” global economy.

David W. NelmsDavid W. Nelms is chairman and chief executive officer of Discover Financial Services. He was elected chairman of the board in January 2009. He has served as chief executive officer since 2004, and was president and chief operating officer from 1998 to 2004. Prior to joining Discover, Nelms worked at MBNA America Bank from 1990 to 1998, most recently as a vice chairman.

Carlos A. CabreraCarlos A. Cabrera is the former chairman, president, and chief executive officer of UOP, a Honeywell Company. Cabrera retired in June 2009 after 35 years with UOP, a leading international supplier of process technology, catalysts, and technical and engineering services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical and gas processing industries. He served a number of positions culminating as chairman. He held responsibilities in technical services in the following regions: Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
